My Philosophy Regarding Birth
I am an independent practitioner dedicated to offering my clients personalized one on one support |
The first question I am asked by every client is "What lead you to become a doula?" My standard answer is that it was my birth experience with my oldest son that taught me the value of support. My son's birth was great but I learned a few things during that experience.
1. Things hardly ever go as planned. That's why it's important to have a knowledgeable, supportive, objective person who is there to support only you. 2. Midwives (and nurses) don't labor sit. I was having a birth center birth. I assumed the midwife would be present during my entire labor. I realize now that they'd prefer to labor sit, but they have other patients, phone calls to return, paperwork to fill out. They are there as much as they can, but you're not the only patient they're supporting. 3. My husband needed support as much as I did. I assumed my husband would be my labor coach. My husband is an amazing, gentle, loving and supportive husband but he's having a birth experience also. He is not a birth professional and this was his first child. He needed someone there to coach him as to how to best help me. The wide eyed look of panic he had through the entire experience told me that. 4. Group classes are good.....to a point. Group classes are a very efficient way to communicate general, basic information. My husband and I were very good students. We took every class the birth center offered and honestly I still felt very unprepared. I am a unique individual person. My husband is a unique individual person. We each have unique wants, needs, fears and expectations. Having someone sit with us in our home for 3 or 4 hours to really get to know Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
